Term 4 Week 5

Yesterday Madde turned 11. We sang 'Happy Birthday' to her and wished her all the best as an 11 year old.

Congratulations to Hannah (cricket) and Emily S (netball) who were named 'Player of the Day' for their respective sports teams.

Room 6 News

Congratulations to Emily M who has earned a Gold Athletics Certificate.

The School Choir is performing in the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival at Horncastle Arena.

All the best to John, Nina, Emily S, Hannah, Emily M, Savanna, Madde, Taylor, Christine and Portia.

  Congratulations to John, Portia and Savanna who placed third, first and second respectively in the Year 6 speech finals.

Congratulations to Emily S who has been named in the Canterbury Touch Rep Team and will play in nelson at Show Weekend.

Games

The Fantail Reading Group read a story about a game involving kites and eggs. They then created their own games with the same theme. Today they shared their games. Everyone had lots of fun playing these games.

Today Nia, William, Madde and Maia represented OLV at the Zone Cross Country races. They all ran well and enjoyed the experience.

Tapa Cloth

As part of our Caritas focus on the Pacific we learnt a little bit about Tapa Cloth, which is a special bark cloth made in Tonga and Fiji among other Pacific countries. Tapa cloth is made from the bark of mulberry trees and takes a long time to make. Plants are used to make dyes to paint the tapa cloth.
We made out own tapa cloth using paper and crayon and a template to create a pattern.

Congratulations to Ryan and Madde who received certificates at the School Assembly on 24 March.

Congratulations to our two 'Stars of the Week' 

Madde and Nia.

Congratulations to Toby whose team won a Rugby League tournament in Dunedin. His team also lead the teams onto the field in the Warriors v the Bull Dogs game and played during half time.

Jameson, Toby and Blake presented a play 'Too Much Noise' to the class this morning. 

They played their characters well and used lots of expression. Ka pai!

Cricket Game and 'Stars of the Week'

Today the Year 5 and 6 Girls Cricket team had their first game. They played at West Spreydon School and had a great game. Congratulations to Nina who was named 'Bowler of the Day.

The 'Stars of the Week' are Hannah and Portia, who received the most points from the class leaders.

Writing Snippets

Last week we wrote about one thing we did on holiday. Toady we published our favourite sentence from our story. These are now on the classroom wall - come in to read them.

Here's a few:

I watched my sister’s sand castle crumble like crumbs on a cookie.

We had KFC, fish and chips and pizza. I was stuffed like a teddy bear after that.

William

My dad and I made lunch the night before. It was chicken, lamb and salad. Nana made traffic light jelly. Mum and Hugo packed bananas, peaches and nectarines. We bought bread rolls and butter. Uncle Dan just sat on the chilly bin.

(Opening sentence) Oh no! Not again! Christmas shopping troubles.

(conclusion) The next day I wrapped all the presents and while I was doing that I felt proud for dealing with the problem.

When I got ready I put tight clothes on by accident. I could feel the layers squeezing my body like I was in a small room.
